Snowy Jeep

In Southwest Michigan, the relentless grip of the snow miser is inescapable.

On Monday morning, I faced my first car issue of the year due to the icy temperatures and snowy weather. I approached my Jeep, got inside, and as I attempted to close the driver's door, it refused to shut.

Naturally, I gave it a few good slams (I’m sure those vigorous hits helped me vent some pent-up frustration!). But then it hit me that it was time to buckle down and focus!

I could reach out to one of my colleagues at the office. I could also contact my mechanic, Mr. Muffler. Alternatively, I could attempt to solve the problem on my own, which is precisely what I chose to do.

I took a close look at the lock, got my hands a bit dirty, and managed to tinker my way to a solution! I felt a sense of pride in my accomplishment, though deep down, I know I'm not exactly equipped to handle issues that arise while on the road.

Funny enough, only an hour after I repaired my door, I stumbled upon a story that warned I’d be in a bind if my car broke down on the road! Take a look at this!

Ready.gov has compiled a comprehensive checklist of essential items to keep in our vehicles for safety in the event of being stranded during a snowstorm or experiencing a breakdown.

  1. Jumper cables
  2. Flares or reflective triangles
  3. Ice scraper
  4. Phone charger
  5. Flashlight
  6. Water and snacks
  7. Heated blanket (one that plugs into your 12-volt charger)
  8. Body and hand warmers (like Hot Hands)
  9. Tow straps
  10. Traction mats for your tires (Weather.gov also says you can carry a bag of sand or kitty litter in your trunk for better traction)

I currently possess 4 out of the 10 suggested items, and naturally, one of them is snacks.

It seems like a visit to the auto parts shop is in order… who knows, I might just encounter an attractive salesperson while I'm there.

Primarily, I just want to get through the winter season. Please take your time and stay safe!
