Motorists cautioned that a single illuminated button on the dashboard signals 'bad news'

Drivers have been warned one button on their dashboard is "not good news". Motorists are just realising what 'ABS' button on a dashboard means - with road users up and down the country warned in the wake of Christmas.

According to experts at Stoneacre, many road users “know their car has ABS but don’t know what it actually does”. Worryingly, an ABS light appearing on the dashboard or rev counter could be a sign of a major problem with the vehicle's system.

This issue could be due to a malfunction in the ABS. The AA clarified: “When any component of the anti-lock braking system is not functioning properly, the ABS warning light will illuminate. You can refer to your vehicle's manual to identify this warning light and understand its implications.”

“If the ABS warning light illuminates, it indicates that the anti-lock braking system is not functioning properly. This may also impact other systems such as stability control and traction control, if your vehicle is equipped with them.” The AA further stated: “Your MOT will also be unsuccessful if the ABS light remains on.”

The RAC, a competing motoring and breakdown service, has also provided advice for drivers who notice warning lights illuminating on their dashboards as we move further into the New Year, leaving the holiday season behind.

The RAC stated online: “If the ABS warning light activates on its own, you should still experience regular, unassisted braking, allowing you to safely continue your trip. However, maintain a safe distance, exercise additional caution, and make sure to have it inspected at your earliest convenience.”

“If the brake warning light activates, it may suggest that the brake system is malfunctioning. In this case, you should pull over immediately and contact recovery services if you have breakdown coverage.”
