LANSING, Mich. —The Michigan State Police has introduced its first battery electric vehicle, a 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E, to its patrol fleet, according to a news release.

According to the announcement, the Mustang has been designated for the State Security Operations Section, where it will assist state property security officers in delivering law enforcement and security services at state-owned and leased facilities in Lansing.

"This presents a thrilling chance for us to study, in real time, the performance of a battery electric vehicle during patrol operations," stated Col. James F. Grady II, the director of the MSP..

According to the release, he pointed out that the officers’ restricted daily mileage, reduced speeds, and availability of charging stations in downtown Lansing create an optimal setting for testing a police-package electric vehicle.

The Precision Driving Unit of the MSP, which is nationally acclaimed for its annual Police Vehicle Evaluation, started evaluating BEVs in 2022, although it has mainly relied on hybrids for its fleet.

"By incorporating this battery electric vehicle into our patrol fleet, we will have the opportunity to analyze its long-term performance to assess potential cost savings and its wider suitability for our fleet," stated Lt. Nicholas Darlington, head of the Precision Driving Unit.
