On March 12, 2024, a sign for Kohl's department store is displayed outside its location in Miami, Florida. The company's shares declined after reporting a decrease in same-store sales for the fourth quarter. Kohl's is anticipated to see its annual sales and profits fall short of market forecasts, aligning with warnings from Macy's and Nordstrom about a difficult year ahead for U.S. department stores. Kohl’s is set to shut down over twenty store locations throughout the United States.

On Jan. 9, the retailer announced a series of “real estate changes” for the new year, including the future of several stores among the more than 1,150 locations nationwide.

The retailer announced plans to shut down 27 stores situated in "underperforming areas" by April 2025.

As stated in the press release, all store employees were notified of the situation and were given the option of a "competitive severance package or the chance to apply for other available positions at Kohl's."

Along with the announcement of store shutdowns, it was revealed that the Kohl's San Bernardino E-commerce Fulfillment Center (EFC) is scheduled to close once its current lease expires in May 2025.

The San Bernardino site has been functioning since 2010 and is one of 15 EFCs and distribution hubs nationwide for Kohl’s.

The retailer mentioned that the "enhanced efficiencies brought about by advanced technological features at the latest EFC facilities" and the broadened abilities to process orders directly from store locations have enabled Kohl’s to complete orders without relying on the facility located in California.

Kohl's CEO Tom Kingsbury stated on January 9, “We approach these decisions with great seriousness. As we work towards enhancing our long-term growth strategy, it is crucial that we make tough yet essential choices to ensure the well-being and future of our business, benefiting both our customers and our employees.”

Kohl's isn't the sole retailer to recently declare store shutdowns.

In December 2024, employees of Party City were told that the company was closing and at the end of February 2025, all store locations would be shuttered. Macy's also confirmed on Jan. 9 that the retailer would be closing 66 stores as part of an ongoing reorganization strategy.
