In the past year, significant transformations occurred in the shopping landscapes of Mahoning and Shenango Valley. The Southern Park Mall was sold to Kohan Retail Investment Group in late December, marking a more favorable outcome compared to the Shenango Valley Mall, which unfortunately shut down in March.

The demolition process for the Shenango Valley Mall in Hermitage has commenced and is expected to take around three months to finish.

On Monday, Butterfli Holdings LLC announced that the future redevelopment of the 54-acre site will feature the following retail establishments:

- Chili's

- LongHorn Steakhouse Grill

- Chick-fil-A

The meeting is in progress, and additional businesses are anticipated to be confirmed shortly.

A spokesperson for Butterfli Holdings LLC has announced that the redevelopment project is anticipated to generate 900 employment opportunities in the local community.

Mark Longietti, the Director of Community and Business Development for Hermitage City, is anticipated to commence the meeting at the Hermitage Municipal Building, where he will discuss plans for the development of the property.

"It's ready for redevelopment, and the developer intends to construct separate buildings for a few national chain restaurants and retail-focused establishments," Longetti shared with 21 News.

The area will be segmented into nine parcels designated for construction, along with two additional lots allocated for recreational activities and various other purposes.

Longietti mentioned that the city aims to acquire a portion of that land to create a green space at the heart of the redevelopment project.

Constructed in 1968, the Shenango Mall has faced challenges in recent years following the departure of two of its three anchor stores, Sears and Macy’s.

The third anchor store, JC Penney, officially shut down on May 31, 2024, following a series of legal disputes with the mall's owner regarding the eviction of the national retailer.
