As per the initial findings from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, global smartphone shipments rose by 2.4% year-over-year (YoY) to reach 331.7 million units in the fourth quarter of 2024 (4Q24). This achievement represents the sixth straight quarter of growth in shipments, culminating in a total of 1.24 billion units shipped throughout the year, reflecting a robust recovery following two years of decline. IDC anticipates that the market will continue to expand in 2025, although at a more gradual rate, as refresh cycles increase and previously suppressed demand is met. In 2024, Apple's iPhone held its position as the leader in global smartphone shipments and market share.

Nabila Popal, senior research director for Worldwide Client Devices at IDC, stated, “The significant growth observed in 2024 highlights the smartphone market's resilience, occurring despite ongoing macroeconomic challenges, foreign exchange issues in emerging markets, persistent inflation, and tepid consumer demand. Vendors have successfully adapted their strategies to stimulate growth by emphasizing promotions, launching products across various price points, offering interest-free financing options, and implementing aggressive trade-in programs—contributing to premiumization and enhancing low-end device sales, particularly in China and other emerging markets. While we are hopeful for continued growth in 2025, the potential for new and higher tariffs from the incoming US administration has introduced uncertainty within the industry, prompting some companies to adopt precautionary measures to manage risks; however, the overall impact has been limited so far.”

In the fourth quarter and throughout the year, Apple and Samsung held onto the top two spots, but both experienced year-over-year declines in market share. This was largely due to the fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers, who significantly propelled the overall market by concentrating on budget-friendly devices and swiftly expanding their presence in China. Xiaomi secured the third position for both the quarter and the entire year, boasting the highest year-over-year growth rate among the top five competitors. Transsion came in fourth, closely contesting with vivo for the quarter and with OPPO for the year as rivalry among these three companies escalated.

“During the last quarter, the largest Chinese smartphone manufacturers—Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Honor, Huawei, Lenovo, realme, Transsion, TCL, and ZTE—achieved an extraordinary feat, shipping the highest total volume ever recorded in a single quarter, which accounted for 56% of global smartphone shipments in Q4,” stated Francisco Jeronimo, vice president for EMEA Client Devices at IDC. “Although their primary markets continue to be China and Asia, these brands are swiftly broadening their reach across Europe and Africa, propelled by the strong sales of their budget and mid-tier devices. Interestingly, Huawei distinguishes itself by focusing primarily on high-end and premium products, highlighting its unique market strategy in China.”

“Despite the continued growth across several regions, we have seen a decreased demand for foldables in the market, despite intensified promotions and marketing,” said Anthony Scarsella, research director for Client Devices, IDC, in a statement. “Vendors have started shifting R&D away from foldables as consumer interest remains flat. Moreover, numerous vendors are prioritizing new AI advancements at the expense of foldables as AI is increasingly featured on more devices, particularly at the market’s upper echelon thanks to GenAI.”
