Macy's customers heartbroken over the store closures.

Macy's surprised many customers with the announcement of its store closures, but some dedicated shoppers shared their observations on how the retail giant had been struggling for quite some time.

Macy's recently revealed the first 66 of the 150 stores shutting down over the next four to 12 months, leaving only 350 stores. 

Several well-known sites are shutting down, such as the historic Wanamaker Building in Philadelphia and the renowned area in Downtown Brooklyn. 

The once-prominent retail chain will be offering clearance sales with discounts of up to 90 percent as it approaches its store closing dates.

Tony Spring, the chairman and CEO of Macy's, previously stated: "We are shutting down less productive Macy's locations to concentrate our resources on the stores that will drive our future." 

Macy's is revamping the stores it is not closing, and has plans to expand with 15 new Bloomingdale's and 30 new Bluemercury locations.

On Reddit, longtime shoppers shared memories, as some explained how they knew Macy's was declining long before they closed many of the outlets. 

A Reddit user commented, "Macy's used to be a really great store," and then went on to elaborate on the signs.

"I really disliked when they took control of Marshall Field's in Chicago, but it remained a beautiful, upscale store," shared a Reddit user, referencing the former luxury department store. 

"After that, they began to glide," they remarked. 

"The most telling sign for me was when they started using plastic bags. It might seem trivial, but I really believe paper bags are superior," the Reddit user stated. 

Macy's transitioned from using paper bags—still favored by upscale department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale's—to adopting plastic bags, commonly utilized by budget-friendly retail chains. 

Other customers pointed out indications they noticed that the retail giant was gradually diminishing in influence as more individuals opted for online shopping. 

"One individual remarked, 'The issue with these large retail chains is that we no longer require a store that claims to sell 'everything'—the internet provides that for us now.'" 

They mentioned that specialty shops are better, particularly because navigating the variety at Macy's can be quite challenging.

"What we really require are locations where we can consistently discover what we seek. An improved variety for a more limited range of products."

"One commenter noted, 'I wouldn't be shocked if the 34th Street Herald Square store ends up being the sole physical location for the entire brand,' referring to the flagship store known for hosting the iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade." 

In another Reddit thread, shoppers recalled memories of the Center City Philadelphia location. 

Many people shared their thoughts on social media, with one writing on Reddit, 'For nostalgic reasons, I'm so sad.' 

"They reminisced about all the cherished moments spent with the dazzling light display and the organ," they went on. 

Nonetheless, there were those who were prepared for Macy's departure. 

"To be honest, this has been overdue by about a decade - the place appeared worse than a TJ Maxx during Black Friday sales," they commented.
