Cold hard cash

The agency announced that they will reach out to individuals who were unable to claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.

These payments, capped at $1,400 for each individual, are designed to help eligible Americans obtain funds they might have missed while submitting their tax returns.

Recurring Payments, Qualification Criteria

Eligible taxpayers do not need to take any action to receive the payments, as they will be distributed automatically.

According to IRS data, the funds are scheduled to be distributed through direct deposit or paper check by the end of January 2025. Additionally, recipients will get a letter to verify the payment.

The IRS has determined that eligible taxpayers are those who submitted a 2021 tax return but did not request the Recovery Rebate Credit, either by omitting the specific section or by indicating $0.

The IRS urges individuals who have not submitted a tax return for the year 2021 to do so by the deadline of Tuesday, April 15, 2025, in order to be eligible for the credit. This recommendation extends to those with minimal or no income who typically wouldn't file a return.

Supplementary Details

The Recovery Rebate Credit is a refundable tax credit aimed at assisting taxpayers who did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments (EIPs), commonly referred to as stimulus payments, allowing them to obtain those funds.

The IRS has also pointed out that obtaining this credit does not impact one's eligibility for federal assistance programs like SNAP, WIC, or SSI.
