On Wednesday, ADP reported that private employers created 122,000 jobs in December, indicating a "modest" hiring rate and a slowdown in wage increases. This figure fell short of expectations, which had anticipated a rise of 139,000. Predictions varied, with estimates ranging from a low of 100,000 to a high of 160,000. While it's not entirely fair to label this headline as a "disappointment," it does mark the slowest growth in private payrolls since the late summer, a period when the Federal Reserve expressed concern over the labor market.
