How embracing a slower pace and cultivating inner peace can revolutionize your professional journey

A new year brings the promise of fresh starts, but it doesn't require us to discard everything from the past. Rather, it invites us to pause and reflect, allowing us to fully value the lessons we've learned and harness them as motivation for our personal development.

Here’s what I’m carrying forward from this year to the next.

Tranquility

In 2024 I learned that life’s events can shake you to your very core, and there’s little you can do to stop it. But when you reach for peace—focus on finding peace—look for peace everywhere, you realize that in the midst of the challenge and chaos, peace is there, and you’re all right. Tranquility isn’t found in the external experiences. It is an inner game, found deep within. It’s available when you’re not sure what’s your next move or how you will get through the next day. It’s present in this moment and the next, and the one after that.

Grief served as the instructor for this important lesson. If finding peace amid personal sorrow is achievable, then it can undoubtedly be applied to various aspects of life and work. That sense of peace is accessible when called upon for moments like a birth in the delivery room. I have the option to embrace tranquility rather than succumb to stress. With a peaceful mindset, I maintain composure while evaluating and executing the necessary interventions in the systematic way I’ve been trained. I foresee the patient’s requirements and effectively convey them to the team. Choosing peace in these moments not only enhances my experience but also leads to the best possible outcomes.

Take it easy.

Curiously, when you take a moment to slow down, time seems to stretch. By decelerating, you enhance your productivity as your priorities come into sharper focus. Rather than being caught in a whirlwind of urgency and stress, your energy is directed toward the significant steps necessary to reach your objectives. When challenges emerge, the answers begin to unfold naturally.

Savor the journey.

What has happened to the joy that once filled the field of medicine? There was a time when physicians, nurses, therapists, and other team members collaborated closely, fostering a strong sense of community aimed at achieving the best outcomes for patients. However, things have changed. We now find ourselves working in isolation. These silos foster a sense of division. While it’s true that patient care is a serious endeavor, we can still recognize and celebrate each person's unique contributions and find enjoyment in the journey. Moments of this happiness shine through when we operate in our areas of strength, respect one another, and conclude our days with a sense of accomplishment. The medical field could greatly benefit from a resurgence of this spirit.

As I embark on another year in clinical medicine, I feel a sense of enthusiasm—an enthusiasm rooted in my realization of how embracing tranquility, taking my time, and savoring the journey can enhance my presence for myself, my patients, and my colleagues.
