Walmart's 'Updated' Logo Sparks Outrage Online

Do you recall those high school days when you’d suddenly realize an assignment was due, and your friend would kindly allow you to glance at their work? They’d hand it over and say, “Here you go… just tweak a few things so it doesn’t look obvious.” Then, you’d take their advice and, in reality, end up altering just a single word!

That’s basically what Walmart just did when they revealed their “new” logo. After two decades of touting the same logo, the company decided to change things up with a fresh look…

I really believe that when a high school student alters just a word or two, it might represent a bigger transformation than what we've seen here. Did they simply bold the logo? Am I overlooking something?

Rebranding is something every business considers at some point. Most times they’re unnecessary, sometimes they are long overdue. With a giant like Walmart, it’s not like they need to change anything. And clearly, they didn’t, but they’re saying they did.

Social media was clearly alive with jokes regarding the fresh appearance.

“I can’t believe someone got paid for this,” one X user wrote.

“A don’t change will certainly better serve customers,” another X account added.

Another X user poked fun at what we can only imagine took more than just money to produce, “It’s amazing that Walmart probably spent $25,000,000 and used 100 different marketers to slightly change the Pantone color on their logo after probably 2 years of market research.”

Putting jokes aside, Walmart is quite pleased with the decision, as reflected in the assurance they displayed in their press release.

“William White, senior vice president and Chief Marketing Officer of Walmart U.S., stated, ‘This update reflects the vision of our founder, Sam Walton, and showcases our growing abilities along with our enduring dedication to meet the needs of our customers now and in the future.’”

"Although our brand's appearance and essence are more modern, our updated brand identity showcases Walmart's lasting dedication to Sam's values and our commitment to meeting our customers' needs in every way possible."

What stood out to me the most in the quote was the following line: “As our customers evolve, we will too.”

Given that the logo has hardly evolved, does that imply we haven't really changed over the years? That seems to make sense.
