WISCONSIN — On December 28, PowerSchool, a widely-used cloud software for educational institutions and parents, reported that it had been compromised in a cyberattack, as stated in a company announcement.

PowerSchool has verified that the accessed records belong to the student information system and are "pertinent to families and educators."

Chris Bucher, the Communications Director for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, stated in an email that the department is aware of the data breach. He mentioned that this incident happened beyond the control of the school districts.

"According to Bucher, school districts are especially at risk from cybersecurity threats because of insufficient dedicated funding. To address this issue, State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly has suggested an exemption for non-recurring revenue limits, which is intended to improve school safety and bolster cybersecurity in her biennial budget proposal."
