Nintendo's stock has surged to a 52-week peak after the announcement of the Switch 2.

Nintendo officially announced Switch 2 today, showing a console that looks somewhat similar to the immensely popular Switch.

When the New York Stock Exchange opened later, Nintendo‘s share price rose to $15.77, the highest point it’s reached at any point in the past year. At the time of writing it’s dropped slightly to $15.49 but is still notably higher than the $14.04 it was sitting at on January 8.

Commenting on the rise, Japan game industry consulancy firm Kantan Games’ CEO Dr Serkan Toto told VGC that shareholders appeared to be happy that the Switch 2 leaks were true and that Nintendo was playing it safe with the new console’s design.

“Investors were afraid of another Wii U situation where Nintendo tries to experiment or over-innovate but misses what users actually demand,” Toto told us.

"There's definitely a sense of relief within the financial sector regarding Switch 2. During this transition phase, investors were looking for a more incremental, iPhone-style evolution, and Nintendo has certainly met those expectations."

Nevertheless, Toto mentioned that Nintendo's choice to withhold many details about the Switch 2 resulted in today's announcement being less impactful than it might have been.

"Ultimately, the recent leaks took away much of the surprise, at least from my perspective," he stated. "However, even if the leaks hadn't happened, I believe the impact of this trailer pales in comparison to the one that unveiled the original Switch in 2016."

“We anticipated that Nintendo would withhold information about their software, but they also remained silent regarding the price, release date, and even fundamental features. I wasn't expecting much, and my main interest lies in the software lineup – that video is bound to be much more thrilling.”

A Nintendo Direct presentation focusing on Switch 2 is planned for April 2, where more details on the console and its software are expected, as well as potentially pricing and release date information.
