It’s one of the year’s most anticipated sequels and it’s not even a movie. On Thursday morning, Nintendo revealed the first look at the Switch 2, the successor to LGBTQ+ gamers' preferred console, the iconic and beloved Nintendo Switch.

The trailer opens by showcasing the existing Nintendo Switch, featuring its signature red and blue Joy-Con controllers. As the visuals progress, we witness the screen enlarging, its corners becoming slightly more rounded. Ultimately, the classic red and blue Joy-Cons transition into a more streamlined design, now in black with hints of color peeking out from under the thumbsticks — a gentle blue and a pink with coral undertones. (Could it be that the Nintendo Switch 2 embraces a more inclusive vibe?)

The trailer has confirmed that the console will launch later this year and will feature backward compatibility, allowing it to play games from the original Switch alongside its next-generation counterpart. Similar to the original Switch, the upcoming model will be designed for portability while also offering the option to connect to a television or other displays when docked.

As stated in the trailer, more information regarding the upcoming console will be revealed on April 2 during the next Nintendo Direct—these are the regularly scheduled events where the company unveils and highlights new hardware and game titles.

Although only a few Switch 2 games have been confirmed so far, the trailer did include footage of a new Mario Kart game, which is enough for a longtime Peach stan like me to get excited about. (I looked very hard at the footage for any sign of trans icon Birdo, but alas, I did not see her signature red bow anywhere.)
